Expectations!

When it comes to remodeling your home, hiring a professional should be a smart and stress-free choice. However, it’s important to know what to expect throughout the process to ensure a smooth and successful project.

First thing third, it’s essential to have a clear understanding of the scope of work and associated costs. A good contractor would be able to provide you with a detailed estimate that outlines all materials, labor, and other expenses involved in the project; and don’t hesitate to negotiate or shop around for better prices on materials.

Transparency is also key when it comes to billing practices. A reputable contractor should be open and upfront about their charges, keeping receipts for all materials and supplies and providing regular updates on the progress of the project. This level of transparency helps to build trust and ensures that you have a clear understanding of the costs associated with your project.

It’s also important to have realistic expectations when it comes to the time frame for your project. While a good contractor will be able to give you a rough estimate of how long the project will take, it’s always a good idea to allow for some extra time in case of unexpected delays or setbacks, which there are always some. Be sure to discuss the time frame with your contractor before beginning the project and make sure you both agree on a realistic timeline.things third

Timing is everything...

There are a variety of factors that can impact the time frame for a home project, including:

  1. The Complexity of the project: The more complex the project, the longer it will likely take to complete. Projects that involve structural changes, electrical or plumbing work, or other specialized tasks may take longer to complete than simpler projects.

  2. Availability of materials: Depending on the materials needed for the project, it may take longer to order and receive them. This can add additional time to the project timeline.

  3. Weather: Outdoor projects may be impacted by inclement weather, which can delay progress.

  4. Unexpected issues: During the course of a renovation project, it’s not uncommon to encounter unexpected issues such as hidden damage or unforeseen problems with electrical or plumbing systems. These issues can add time to the project timeline.

  5. Other commitments: If the handyman has other commitments or is working on multiple projects at once, it may take longer to complete your project.

It’s always a good idea to allow for some extra time in the project timeline to account for potential delays or unforeseen issues.

Get the fixtures first!

There are several reasons why it can be smart to order your fixtures, doors, and trim package before starting a project for your home:

  1. Planning: By ordering these items beforehand, you can plan out the rest of your project more accurately. This includes determining the placement of electrical outlets, switches, and other features that may depend on the size and location of your fixtures, doors, and trim.

  2. Cost savings: Ordering these items in advance can also help you take advantage of bulk discounts or special offers that may be available.

  3. Coordination: By ordering all of your fixtures, doors, and trim at the same time, you can ensure that they will all match and coordinate with each other. This can help create a cohesive look throughout your home.

  4. Timing: Ordering these items ahead of time can also help ensure that they are available when you need them, rather than having to wait for them to be shipped or delivered. This can help keep your project on schedule.

Ordering your fixtures, doors, and trim package before starting a remodel project can help you plan and coordinate your project more effectively, potentially saving you time and money in the process.

Google SketchUp - Estimation & Planning

As a handyman, I have used a variety of tools and software to help with my projects, but one that has consistently proved to be invaluable is Google SketchUp. When it comes to creating a layout for let’s say, an estimate for a basement finishing project, there is no better tool than SketchUp.

First and foremost, SketchUp allows me to create highly accurate and detailed plans for my projects. I am able to create precise models of the space I will be working in. This allows me to get a much clearer picture of what the finished project will look like, and make any necessary adjustments to my plans before I even start work.

Using Google Sketch-up for planning this finishing job for this basement.

Estimation

Google SketchUp is also good for creating estimates for remodeling projects (like the one above) because it allows me to create highly accurate and detailed plans regarding materials for any current project I am working on. Construction has tight margins, and my clients are looking for the best deals, so creating a well-thought-out estimate is key to being a successful handyman/remodeling business. I can get exactly the area, volume, and many more calculations regarding material usage and square footage easily.

Sharing ideas with clients

Another reason I love using SketchUp is that it makes it easy to share my plans with my clients. With the ability to export my models as PDFs or images, I can easily send my clients a visual representation of what their finished basement will look like. This helps to ensure that we are all on the same page when it comes to the project, and can help to avoid any misunderstandings or discrepancies down the road.

In addition to its accuracy and sharing capabilities, SketchUp is also incredibly user-friendly. Even if you are not an experienced 3D modeler, the program is straightforward and easy to learn. This makes it accessible to anyone who needs to use it, whether you are a handyman like me or a homeowner looking to plan out your own home improvement project.

In conclusion, whether you are a professional handyman or a DIY enthusiast, SketchUp is a must-have tool for any project.

Selecting the Right Paint Color

Picking the right paint color for your home can be a daunting task. With so many options to choose from, it can be hard to know where to start. One helpful way to narrow down your options is by considering complementary colors.

Complementary colors are colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel, such as red and green, blue and orange, and purple and yellow. These colors tend to bring out the best in each other and can create a dynamic and eye-catching look when used together.

When selecting paint colors for your home, you can use complementary colors to create balance and interest in a space. For example, if you have a room with a lot of blue accents, you might consider painting the walls a complementary color like orange or yellow. These colors will help to bring out the blue accents and create a cohesive look.

In addition to using complementary colors to bring out accents in a room, you can also use them to create contrast. For example, if you have a room with mostly neutral colors, you might consider adding a pop of color with a complementary color. This can help to create visual interest and make the space feel more dynamic.

When choosing complementary colors for your home, it’s important to consider the overall color scheme of the space. If you have a lot of bold colors already present, you may want to choose more subdued complementary colors to balance out the space. On the other hand, if you have a more neutral color scheme, you can use bolder complementary colors to add some drama to the space.

Overall, using complementary colors can be a great way to add interest and balance to your home. Whether you’re looking to bring out accents or create contrast, these colors can help you achieve the look you want. Just be sure to consider the overall color scheme of the space and choose colors that will work well together.

Some online tools that I use

Below I took a picture with my phone, as the client wanted to find colors that would work well with their granite countertops

Using the image of a granite countertop to create a color palette using the Color to Image app is a good idea because granite is a natural stone that has a wide range of colors and tones. This can provide a variety of options for creating a cohesive color palette for a design project.

There are many online tools and resources that can help you find complementary colors for your home. Some popular options include:

  1. Adobe Color: This tool allows you to choose a starting color and then suggests complementary colors based on the color wheel. You can also browse through different color schemes and save your favorites for later.

  2. Canva Color Palette Generator: This tool allows you to enter a hex code or select a color from a palette, and it will generate a range of complementary colors that you can use in your design.

  3. Colormind: This tool uses artificial intelligence to generate color palettes based on a starting color or image. It includes options for complementary, analogous, and triadic color schemes.

  4. Palette Generator: This tool allows you to upload an image and generates a color palette based on the dominant colors in the image. It also includes options for complementary, analogous, and triadic color schemes.

  5. Color Hex: This website provides a wide range of color-related tools, including a color wheel that shows complementary colors for any given color. It also includes a color picker and a color scheme generator.

These are just a few examples of the many online tools and resources available for finding complementary colors. With a little bit of experimentation and exploration, you should be able to find a tool that meets your needs and help you choose the perfect colors for your home.

Painted Popcorn Ceiling Removal

If you’re tired of looking at that dated (hopefully not painted) popcorn ceiling, it’s time to consider removing it. As a handyman, I’ve helped many homeowners remove their popcorn ceilings and I’m here to share my tips on how to tackle this project.

A client reached out to me while they were traveling and inquired if I was available to remove the popcorn ceiling in their rental property. I had some openings in my schedule and agreed to take on the project. However, upon starting the work, I discovered that the ceiling had been painted and there were also some preexisting patches that needed to be addressed. Here’s how I approached this situation…

Before we get started, it’s important to note that removing a popcorn ceiling can be a messy and time-consuming process. It’s also important to wear proper protective gear, such as goggles, gloves, and a mask, as the dust and debris can be harmful to your health.

Step 1: Test for asbestos. If your home was built before 1980, it’s important to test for asbestos before beginning the removal process. Asbestos is a hazardous material that was commonly used in construction before it was banned. If your ceiling tests positive for asbestos, it’s important to hire a professional to remove it as inhaling asbestos fibers can cause serious health problems.

Note: If you plan on taking this on your own wear a painter’s respirator (NIOSH-APPROVED OV P95), and a Tyvek disposable suit. Talk to your county about how to dispose of the debris. Legally speaking, it’s fine to do it on your own. There is no law against it. Federal regulations don’t disallow it and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) won’t stop you.

Step 2: Prep the room. Remove all furniture, decorations, and window coverings from the room. Cover the floor and any remaining furniture with a 4-mill plastic (if you have carpet), and X-Paper if you have hardwood or vinyl floors to protect them from dust and wet debris.

Step 3: Wet the ceiling. Using a garden sprayer or a pump sprayer with half of the tank filled with car windshield washer fluid and water. This helps with weakening the binding chemistry of the paint and making it more flexible when scraping off the old (if painted) popcorn texture, thoroughly wetting the ceiling with this mix to a sheen. This will help to loosen the popcorn texture and make it easier to scrape off. Let the ceiling soak for at least 15-30 minutes before proceeding.

Step 4: Scrape the ceiling. Using a 10″ drywall knife, begin scraping off the wet popcorn texture. Be sure to work in small sections and use a steady, firm motion with the angle of the blade around 15 degrees to avoid damaging the drywall underneath. As you work, the wet popcorn will turn into a sludgy mess (if not painted), and will come off as if like peeling tape if painted, so be prepared for a bit of a mess.

Step 5: Clean up. Once you’ve scraped off all of the popcorn texture, it’s time to clean up. Use a wet/dry vacuum to suck up any excess debris as well as a broom for larger debris and bag them up! Then wipe down the ceiling with a damp sponge mop to remove any remaining dust.

Step 6: Repair and finish. Now that the popcorn ceiling is removed, you’ll likely have some imperfections in the drywall that need to be repaired. Use Type-3 Joint Compound (Top Coat), repair any “unforeseeable” patches, then use an 18″ paint roller on a pole with a heavy nap roller. Now mix the joint compound up to the consistency of a thick pancake batter and pour it into a large painter’s tray and roll it on in 5’x5′ sections, then smooth it out with a 14″ drywall knife. Then sand the ceiling smoothly. I would recommend renting a 9″ orbital-oscillating vacuum sander made for drywall with 240 grit. Once the ceiling is repaired and sanded, you can paint or apply a new texture to the ceiling to give it a fresh, updated look.

Removing a painted popcorn ceiling is a fairly labor-intensive project, and has a cost of around $6-sqf ~ $10-sqf depending on the region you live in for a professional to do the work for you, but the end result is worth it. With a little patience and elbow grease, you can transform your outdated ceiling into a beautiful, modern surface. Just be sure to follow all safety precautions and, if necessary, test for asbestos before beginning the removal process.

It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it!

Getting there...

A little paint, and finished!

What is DELTA®-FL Plastic Sub-Floor?

I always strive to provide my clients with the best possible solutions for their home improvement needs. When it comes to subflooring for wet basement situations, especially here in Rapid City, SD, one option that I often recommend is DELTA-FL Plastic Sub-Flooring.

DELTA-FL is a high-performance, plastic subflooring product that is designed to provide a durable, moisture-resistant surface for finished flooring in basements and other areas prone to moisture. Its combination of high-density polyethylene and recycled fibers makes it resistant to water penetration and damage from water vapor, which is essential in wet basement situations where excess moisture can cause serious damage to traditional wood or particle board subfloors.

In addition to its moisture resistance, DELTA-FL is also very durable and easy to install. It can be easily cut to fit around corners and irregular shapes, and it can be installed over a variety of surfaces, including concrete, wood, and even existing flooring (I would not recommend ha). The material is also lightweight, making it easy to handle and transport.

Another advantage of DELTA-FL is its ability to insulate against cold and heat. The material has a high R-value, which means it is able to reduce heat loss and keep your basement warm in the winter and cool in the summer. This can help to reduce energy costs and improve the overall comfort of your home.

Its excellent performance and easy installation make it a great choice for any home improvement project.

Painting Kitchen Cabinets

As a handyman, I often get asked about the most cost-effective ways to update a kitchen or bathroom. One option that I always suggest is painting the cabinets. Not only can this save a significant amount of money compared to replacing the cabinets altogether, but it also has a number of other benefits.

Recently, I received a request from a couple to paint their kitchen cabinets. These cabinets were made of oak and were in excellent condition, having been installed in a home built in the mid-‘2000s. The homeowners wanted to give their kitchen a fresh, updated look, and decided to paint the cabinets rather than replace them. Here is the process I followed to complete the project…

First and foremost, painting cabinets is a much cheaper option than replacing them. New cabinets can be extremely expensive, especially if you opt for higher-quality materials or custom designs. On the other hand, a few cans of paint and some elbow grease can completely transform your existing cabinets at a fraction of the cost.

In addition to saving money, painting your cabinets also allows you to completely customize the look of your kitchen or bathroom. If you’re tired of the current color or style of your cabinets, a fresh coat of paint can give them a whole new look. This can be especially helpful if you’re trying to match your cabinets to a new backsplash or countertop.

One thing to keep in mind when painting cabinets is the importance of proper preparation. This includes setting up a paint booth to avoid getting paint everywhere, having a clean place to work, and masking off the cabinet carcasses to protect them from overspray. When painting I always use some form of a make-shift paint booth if on-site. A paint booth can be as simple as setting up some plastic sheeting to create a room inside a room. Using box fans with a 1x20x20 furnace filter. One brings air in, and one brings air out of the “bubble”, this setup works a treat to deal with paint particles in the air that may escape into the house and on your work. As for masking the carcasses, this can be done with painter’s tape, painter’s plastic, and masking paper.

It’s important to take the time to properly prepare your cabinets before painting to ensure a clean and professional finish. This includes cleaning all surfaces paint will adhere to with mild soap to stop the effect of “fisheye”, filling any wood grain with a water downed version of joint compound, and filling in large gaps created by knots (If there are any) with Bondo filler, caulking if needed, and then sanding to create a smooth finish. There is a lot of work that goes into painting cabinets correctly.

Overall, painting cabinets is a great way to save money and customize the look of your kitchen or bathroom. With proper preparation and a little bit of patience, you can achieve professional-looking results without breaking the bank. So if you’re considering updating your cabinets, don’t forget to consider the cost-effective option of painting them.
